Although The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was released to much fanfare as the most expensive show ever made, many fans had reservations regarding the spin-off. The series made fans nostalgic by providing significant backstories for prominent characters and major events from Peter Jackson’s adaptations of the two main books — The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) trilogy and The Hobbit (2012-2014) trilogy.

‘The Rings of Power’ season 2: All the details

What happened in ‘The Rings of Power’ season 1 and what will be the plot of season 2?

The Rings of Power takes place several generations before the events of The Hobbit and the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The series mainly chronicles the histories of Middle-earth that were written as backstories for the original books.

The main antagonist Sauron (Charlie Vickers) is the evil lieutenant of the dark lord Morgoth who possesses the One Ring that gives him the ultimate power to rule over the three races — the humans, Orcs and trolls. Additionally, he has a significant sway over Uruk-Hai, Wargs and the dragons. The central plot revolves around the main protagonists, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo).

Galadriel embarks on a mission to overrule Sauron to make Halbrand the ruler as she believes he is the rightful heir to the throne of the Southlands. On the other hand, Elrond helps the elves restore their lost powers while building a new forge with the dwarves.

The finale brings several arcs and characters together to reveal an intriguing twist. Galadriel realises that the Sauron she was searching for was Halbrand all along. Boyfriend-turned-mortal enemy Sauron successfully tricks her with his disguise to seek the new metal that was mined to create rings to rule over Middle-earth. The finale reveals that the first three Rings of Power have been created hinting at the forging of other rings in the upcoming seasons.

As seen in The Rings of Power season 2 trailer, released by Prime Video on 26 July 2024 at the San Diego Comic-Con, Sauron, aka the Dark Lord, employs his cunning ways to rebuild his army after being cast out by Galadriel. He must also overlook the creation of the Rings of Power if he wants to succeed in binding everyone from Middle-earth to his will.

Furthermore, many crowd-favourite characters will be compelled to take a plunge into the darkness as they witness their world on the brink of calamity, including the beloved, Galadriel, who is still reeling from her involvement with the Dark Lord. Fans can expect The Rings of Power season 2 to be much darker and edgier.

Season 2 will also need to address several unresolved plotlines such as the threat of Sauron. On the other hand, Adar and his Orcs continue to reign over Mordor. The existence of Nùmenor along with the future of Elves, Dwarves and Harfoots is expected to be explored in the upcoming season.
